Place Value Pals

You have most likely heard that we love us some good personification and alliteration in room 8! We've got Quinn the Question Mark, Evie the Exclamation Point, Sam Subtraction, Addison Addition, and the list goes on and on!

This week in math we have been digging in to place value.  Place value is often a tricky concept to master for second graders but it is the foundation of most math so my kiddos don't just need to get it, they need to totally get it!  Therefore the concept needs to be kid friendly, engaging, and memorable!  Hence the creation of our newest friends!  With no further ado, I would like to introduce you to... Wally the Ones Cube, Tyler the Tens Stick, Harlan the Hundreds Flat, and Trevor the  Thousands Cube!

Additionally, the students are working through a great round of place value centered math centers for the next few weeks.  One of them is a small group center with me, where our second graders are learning the standard algorithm for multi digit addition.  I love how the students feel so proud to accomplish this new skill.

On Friday the students made these wonderful Polar Bear Place Value Paws to show their understanding of standard form, word form, expanded form, base ten blocks, and even/odd.

Keep up the super work second graders! I love doing math with all of you!
