Suffixes, Wacky Animals, Penguins, and Place Value

As random as that group sounds, we've been having a blast with each of those topics!

Last week we dove into word endings ~ suffixes!  Sounds fun right!? Ha!  Well it was actually super great in room 8. :)  First I read a book called Happy Endings to the kiddos.  In this book the teacher explains that the class was going to tackle suffixes after lunch.  The suffixes were frightened about the thought of the students tackling them so they decided to leave the room and and hit the gym!  When the students came back from lunch the word endings were nowhere to be found. Gasp! As the story continues the suffixes leave clues around the classroom for the children to find them and put them back where they belong - at the end of words.  Well, I stopped reading the book just before this part because I had hidden suffixes around the room and created clues our our kids to go on their very own suffer search.   Fun fun!

We brushed up on our understandings of parts of speech and then the students created super silly Wacky Animal Flip Books.

Penguins! Oh these adorable birds were sure a labor of love!  #justsayin We are becoming very good at identifying informational text features and understanding their importance in room 8. :) In this unit students researched penguins and created their own penguin books.  They also made super cute symmetry art, and wrote sweet Haikus all about penguins.

The weather has been so up and down, but it was just beautiful the other afternoon we had to take our I-Spy Place Value game outside.  I am so proud and impressed by our so smart second graders!
